Some students learning about the metric system by taking measurements of various part lengths.
__ From
my years in the classroom, I have learned that teaching is NOT
a spectator sport! It is about modeling, manipulating, exploring…sharing,
singing, building (and this is only the beginning)!
Children are more apt to construct knowledge at a deeper level when engaged in hands-on inquiry based experiences that stimulate the senses.
I love this action shot as a group of students work on an inquiry pertaining to paper airplanes.
Classroom Displays
I like to refresh my classroom display boards on a monthly basis to keep the room exciting.
My goal with displays is either to showcase student work or reinforce a current topic of study.
The board below is an interactive one which students used when were are studying ecology.
Equally important to self-discovery is having the opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant to one's life and interests.
I develop my curriculum so that it encompasses my student's interests.
This fosters intrinsic motivation and stimulates the passion to learn.
Given the opportunity for input, students generate ideas and set goals that make for much richer activities than I could have created or imagined myself.
When students have ownership in what they are learning, they are motivated to work hard and master the skills necessary to reach their goals.
This is one small science area in my classroom. The plants have been growing since we went on a field trip at the beginning of the year.
