Reader's Workshop

For this literacy portion of our literacy I place emphasis on the interaction between the students as readers and text.

We work on learning to ask questions, make connections with background knowledge and previously read pieces, and ask questions to clarify comprehension

There are a few main components that are used.
1.  Mini-lessons: I work with students on reading strategies such as inferring or summarizing.  I might also read aloud from a text.
2.   Independent or Guided Reading Time:  This is when students complete DEAR (drop everything and read) and respond to what they are reading.  I will also work with students on topics individually or in small groups.

  3.    Sharing Time where students share with another person their                                                                           journal entries and the other person gives feedback.

One thing I feel is of upmost importance for reading is that students are given LOTS of time to read and those texts chosen are at the "just right" ability for the individual

          Literature Circles

Literature circles are another tool I love to use in my classroom.  In literature circles, small groups of students gather together to discuss a piece of literature in depth.  You may hear talk about events and characters in the book, the author's craft, or personal experiences related to the story.

Literature circles provide a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books. Collaboration is at the heart of this approach.

Finally, literature circles guide students to deeper understanding of what they read through structured discussion and extended written and artistic response.
